In 1996 on my 31st birthday I
started a little project called "Geek of the Week". I did not
own www.mistergeek.com at that time, as a matter of fact I think this
was parked on Geocities, IIRC. The site was dedicated to
finding those in our society who were just a little different than the
rest of you (or so you think!). They were passionate about
what made them "geeky" and wore the "geek" badge with pride.
I have had a wonderful time hunting down 500+ geeks to
showcase on my site. Thank you for joining me.
That was 10 years ago. From this, I have made a few friends,
irked a few more, and confused an even
larger number of people with my brand of eclectic humor. Some
of you IM me on an infrequent basis, some have threatened me, and more than a few of you have contacted me thanking
me for giving you 15 more minutes of fame. I really do not
know what to say, except you are welcome if you have enjoyed the ride
and to those who have not, well...it was all in fun.
Matt Grossman was my first "real" winner back in 1996. Even
though I was the "first" to be honored by this award, I did it only to
show the world that you have to laugh at yourself before you can laugh
at others.
Matt "The Nerd" Grossman was a geek back before being a geek was cool.
His website and his life fascinated me (and many of you by
the number of comments/IM's and e-mails) to the point I went back to
his site many times over the years just to get my fix of "The Nerd's"
brand of geekiness. Matt Grossman is GotW's "Geek of the
Decade" and the final "official" winner of BSOB's "Geek of the
Week" award.
* "WHOA!!!! ...Mistergeek, what do you mean, the FINAL
winner? You giving up?" No I am not "giving up",
but I am no longer going to do a weekly update of GotW. I
have been doing a lot of soul searching/praying (your choice, depending
on your faith or lack thereof) and feel that 10 years is enough for
this. The Christian faith believes everything has a season
and this season is over. Time to move on to the next.
Very simple. While I have enjoyed this very much,
it is time to help people. I will still update my stats and logs since this is a popular part of the site and also because it is fascinating to see who finds my little corner of cyberspace.
* "Oh, you found 'God' so you are gonna shove religion down
our throats..." No, I did not find God, he found me.
No, I will not shove anything down your throat, but I will
share my faith with you if you are interested. My testimony
and my faith are open books for all to see. My Savior, Jesus
Christ, can you yours and wants to be your best friend if you just open
the door he is knocking on.
* "So, what exactly are you going to do?" I am not
100% sure yet, but I do know I am going to dedicate mistergeek.com to
offering simple solutions to people who have questions about their
computers. It could be a big project and may grow beyond what
I can currently handle. The only thing I know for sure is
that God is calling me to help my BiC's and Sic's (Brothers and Sisters
in Christ) and I think mistergeek.com is the vehicle for that.
